We hadn’t originally planned to go to langkawi as we’d never heard of it, but my god sent we glad we went!
Getting there was so simple, quite quick and was ok value for money. Don’t get me wrong you can fly from Penang to Langkawi pretty cheap but we decided to take the boat as you go past some amazing islands and sights.
From George Town it is pretty simple to walk to the ferry terminal, took us 15mins from Love Lane even with our big bags. You need to buy a ticket from one of the outlets on the way, they’re all the same price, very different to Thailand where you have to barter for a better price.
You’ll be paying RM70 per person for a one way ticket to Langkawi. The time table is below for reference.
The terminal is very simple and has a few bakeries for tasty breakfast material. There were two huge cruise liners in as we were waiting to go so luckily the taxi drivers were hassling the inbound passengers rather than us outbound backpackers. The boat itself was really good, comfy seats and films showing the whole way.
The trip takes around 3 hours, after 2 hours you stop at a tiny island for a few people to get off. We wish we knew what this island was called, it looked like paradise! The crossing was calm and easy, I sat watching Moana and then the first part of the new Jungle Book, I do love a kids film!
Once we got to langkawi it was beautiful, blue skies and turquoise water. We were heading for Zackry Guest house on the south west coast in the Pantai Tengah area, the official taxi’s from outside the terminal should cost RM30 door to door. I couldn’t recommend Zackry Guest house more highly, it’s been our home for 10 days and has everything you need! A 3 bed dorm room is RM35 per night, they have cheap beer (RM2), scooters and cars to rent (RM25/RM70 daily), a communal area and kitchen, a plunge pool and laundry facilities. On top of this it’s 50m from the beach and 1km to the town centre. What more can you ask for, heaven!
